Colour guide

In the Quranic examples only the letters to which the rule applies are coloured; the rest of the word stays black. Each colour has one fixed meaning throughout the book:

Ghunnah: Ikhfa', Iqlab, Idgham bi-Ghunnah, doubled Nun and Mim
Izhar: Halqi, Shafawi, Qamari
A letter that is written but not pronounced, or fully merged without Ghunnah
Qalqalah
Madd of two counts: Tabi'i, Badal, Silah Sughra, 'Iwad
Madd of four or five counts: Muttasil, Munfasil, Silah Kubra
Madd Lazim of six counts
Madd of 2, 4 or 6 counts: 'Arid li-s-Sukun and Lin at a stop
Tafkhim (heavy)
Tarqiq (light)
The letter under study in the example
Special cases: Sakt, Imalah, Tashil, Ishmam

Madd Muttasil (obligatory)

Madd Muttasil (المَدّ المُتَّصِل): a Hamzah follows the Madd letter in the same word. It is obligatory; for Hafs by way of ash-Shatibiyyah its length is four or five counts. When stopping on a final Hamzah, four, five or six are allowed.

Madd Muttasil
مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِمِنَ السَّمَآءِ
Al-Baqarah 2:19
إِذَا جَآءَاِذَا جَآءَ
An-Nasr 110:1

An-Nisa 4:22
سِيٓءَ بِهِمۡسِيْٓءَ بِهِمْ
Hud 11:77

Madd Munfasil (permitted)

Madd Munfasil (المَدّ المُنْفَصِل): the Madd letter ends one word and the Hamzah begins the next. For Hafs by way of ash-Shatibiyyah it is four or five counts; by way of Tayyibat an-Nashr (طَيِّبَة النَّشْر) it may also be shortened to two (for information only; this book follows ash-Shatibiyyah). The reciter must be consistent: the length he chooses is kept for every Munfasil in the same recitation, and it is never longer than the Muttasil.

Madd Munfasil
بِمَآ أُنزِلَبِمَآ اُنْزِلَ
Al-Baqarah 2:4
قُوٓاْ أَنفُسَكُمۡقُوْٓا اَنْفُسَكُمْ

Al-Humazah 104:3
Silah Kubra, treated like Munfasil

Madd al-Badal

Madd al-Badal (مَدّ البَدَل): the Hamzah comes before the Madd letter; usually it is a Hamzah that was changed into a Madd letter. For Hafs it is two counts only.
