Noorani Qaida
The first step for complete beginners: the Arabic letters, their sounds and how they join, until the student can read the Quran.
Who it is for
Noorani Qaida is for anyone who cannot yet read the Arabic script of the Quran: children from about 4 or 5 years old, and adults of any age. It builds the foundation that every later course rests on, so we take the time to get it right.
What the student learns
- The Arabic letters
- Each letter, its name and its correct sound from the right place in the mouth and throat (makharij).
- Short vowels
- Fatha, kasra and damma, and how they change a letter's sound.
- Tanween, sukun and shaddah
- The signs that double, stop or strengthen a letter.
- Long vowels (madd)
- Which letters are stretched, and for how long.
- Joining letters
- How letters change shape when joined, and reading whole words.
- First Quran words
- Reading real words and short phrases from the Quran.
How long it takes
It depends on age and on daily practice. With four lessons a week, many students finish the Qaida in a few months. The teacher does not rush: a student moves on only when each lesson is read correctly.
