Verse:

Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most upright and gives glad tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward. [Surah Al-Isra, 17:9]

Tafsir al-Tabari:
Allah, Exalted is He, says: This Quran, which We have revealed to Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), guides and directs those who follow it to that which is most upright. This refers to the path that is the most just and straight among all paths, namely the religion of Allah, with which He sent His prophets, and that is Islam. Allah, Glorified be His praise, states that this Quran leads His servants who follow its guidance to the straight path, which the adherents of other false creeds have strayed from.

As narrated:

  • Yunus reported: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said regarding Allah’s statement, Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most upright: It refers to that which is most correct, the truth. He said: The opposite is falsehood. He recited Allah’s statement, And in it are upright writings [Surah Al-Bayyinah, 98:3], meaning they contain the truth without any crookedness. He also recited, And He did not make for it any deviation, [it is] upright [Surah Al-Kahf, 18:1], meaning it is straight and upright.

Regarding and gives glad tidings to the believers:

Allah says: In addition to guiding to the most upright path, it gives glad tidings to those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, and who act in their worldly life according to what Allah has commanded and refrain from what He has forbidden. It announces that they will have a great reward from Allah for their faith and righteous deeds, meaning a tremendous reward and abundant recompense, which is Paradise that Allah, Exalted is He, has prepared for those whose deeds please Him.

As narrated:

  • Al-Qasim reported: Hussain narrated to us, saying: Hajjaj narrated from Ibn Jurayj regarding that they will have a great reward, saying: This refers to Paradise. Every mention in the Quran of a great reward, a noble reward, or a generous provision refers to Paradise.

The phrase that they will have a great reward is in the accusative case due to its connection to the glad tidings, and the subsequent phrase is conjoined with it.

Regarding And that those who do not believe in the Hereafter [17:10]:
Allah, Exalted is He, says: Those who do not affirm the return to Allah and do not acknowledge reward and punishment in this world, and thus do not refrain from committing sins against Allah, We have prepared for them; meaning, We have readied for them upon their arrival before their Lord on the Day of Resurrection; a painful punishment, meaning an agonizing torment, which is the punishment of Hellfire.
