On Online Quran Tafsir al-Tabari: English Translation for Surah Al-Qamar (54:32-35)
Verse:
Translation:
And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember? The people of Lot denied the warnings. Indeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot – We saved them before dawn, as a favor from Us. Thus do We reward those who are grateful. [Surah Al-Qamar, 54:32-35]
Tafsir al-Tabari (Translation):
Allah, Exalted is He, says: وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ (“And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance”): This means We have made the Quran easy and clear for those who seek to reflect upon it and take admonition. فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ (“So is there any who will remember?”) means: Is there anyone who will take heed and reflect upon it, thereby refraining from what Allah dislikes?
Regarding كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ بِالنُّذُرِ (“The people of Lot denied the warnings”):
Allah, Exalted is He, says: The people of Lot rejected the signs of Allah by which He warned and reminded them.
Regarding إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا (“Indeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones”):
Allah, Exalted is He, says: We sent upon them stones as punishment.

Regarding إِلَّا آلَ لُوطٍ نَجَّيْنَاهُمْ بِسَحَرٍ (“except the family of Lot – We saved them before dawn”):
This means: Except for the family of Lot who believed in him and followed his religion. We saved them from the punishment that We inflicted upon his people who rejected him, and from the storm of stones with which We pelted them. بِسَحَرٍ (“before dawn”): As نِعْمَةً مِنْ عِنْدِنَا (“a favor from Us”), meaning a blessing We bestowed upon Lot and his family, and an honor We granted them from Us.
Regarding كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي مَنْ شَكَرَ (“Thus do We reward those who are grateful”):
Allah says: Just as We rewarded Lot and his family and bestowed Our favor upon them, saving them from Our punishment due to their obedience to Us, so too do We reward those among Our creation who are grateful for Our blessings, obey Us, and adhere to Our commands and prohibitions. The phrase بِسَحَرٍ (“before dawn”) is declined because it is an indefinite noun, but when it is used without the preposition “bi” (e.g., “I did this sahar”), it is not declined.
